Giving 2 Grow

December 2019

Giving 2 Grow has selected Feed Our Students for a grant in 2018 and 2019.

Our Purpose

Our mission is to combat food insecurity in school children and improve students learning by providing weekend meals. We invite you to join our organization in this important mission and by working together we can hep to address this issue that affects thousands of children across the country.

Children in need are able to get meals at school that are subsidized by the government Monday - Friday. But what happens on the weekend when this is not an option? With the help of volunteers and donations, we are able to provide meals for these children on the weekend. This enables them to return to school on Monday nourished and ready to learn.

Currently, Feed Our Students is feeding 700 children in 10 schools, 6 meals every week – with the goal of growing that number to reach 1,000 children. With your help we can ensure that the children in our community are nourished and ready to be fully present in school.

Meet the Team

Steven DelVitto

Founder

Going to Church every Sunday, and being the son of an Orthodox Christian Priest, has truly shaped my personal and professional life. I can remember early on in my childhood learning about the importance of giving back to the community and serving the poor. For example, I can remember packing lunches for the Salvation Army, collecting boxes of food for families at Thanksgiving, wrapping gifts for children at Christmas, and having canned food drives at our church. Later in life, right after getting married, my wife Shadia and I decided that we both shared the desire to give back to the community. In 2010 Shadia and I used a portion of our wedding gifts to start our first Backpack FeedingProgram at St. George Orthodox Church in Bridgeville. Our first program started by feeding 50 children in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, PA. After this first program grew, I was asked to join another non-profit here in Pittsburgh. As part of that organization I grew the Backpack Feeding Program to include over 3,000 children, with 6 meals each over a weekend, in 31 Pittsburgh City Schools every week during the school year. My passion for feeding children is the foundation for Feed Our Students. Our mission is simple; feed 1,000 students per week in Western Pennsylvania and grow the program to feed as many students as possible so no child suffers from food insecurity. With your help and support we can accomplish this goal together. I graduated from Upper St. Clair High School in 2003 and Robert Morris University in 2010 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Administration. I live in Cecil Township with my wife Shadia and our two children Jason and Eliana.
